MUD Overhaul Ideas

While I steadily get around to wrapping up Meat MUD Classic 1.0, I also would like to list a batch of ideas I would like to see happen with the next release series (1.0 to 2.0):

  • Simplification of class structure: The idea here would be to reduce classes available to new players down to the classic four (warrior, priest, rogue, mage), and eliminate the option of dual-classing during char creation entirely. However - I would like to add a system of acquiring new skills and spells that are not typically available to these classes while playing the game.
  • Improvement of race structure: Each race should have innate abilities, but also skills and spells as well. I would like to add a few additional race choices during character creation, and also make it possible to change one's race while in the game.
  • Sub-races: God, Demigod, Undead, Ghost, Vampire, Werewolf, etc. are considered races in the MUD. These should be considered sub-races - for example it should be possible to be a human vampire, an elven ghost, a dwarven werewolf, and so forth. Also, certain races could be immune from becoming certain sub-races.
  • World improvements: Of course, additional areas would be nice, but it should be possible to enhance existing areas as well. With the addition of in-game only skills, spells, races and sub-races it should also be possible to create entire areas that cannot be accessed unless your character fulfills certain requirements. Finally, it would be cool to enable multiple recall points in various towns which could be changed at will by the player, and also chosen during startup.
  • Less focus on level/experience gains, gold farming, etc, and more focus on exploration, learning new abilities, obtaining rare antiquities.
  • Story improvements: Wouldn't it be more interesting if Midgaard was suddenly attacked by an army of skeletons? If an airship suddenly crashed down in front of you out of the blue? If everyone in the game was suddenly teleported into another dimension? I'd like to see automated game events take place randomly at certain times of the day without requiring an immortal to be behind the scenes creating the chaos (although that would be fine too).
  • More ideas will follow as I have them. Please feel free to comment with your own ideas.

    Really do like the idea for story improvements, sounds like a lot of fun to have random events especially if they could be tied into leading off into something else maybe... The world improvements sound good too though :-)

    Hehehe still waiting for the werewolf subrace though :-p will have a lot of fun with that, can post up some ideas I had for it if you were interested at all ^^;
